La Paz was founded by the spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez in 1535. It was not until 1720, due to fierce native resistance, that Jesuit missionaries colonized the present day capital of Baja California Sur. La Paz’s, meaning “peace”, was started when the Jesuit’s built the Nuestra Senora del Pilar de La Paz mission.
